Send
a Letter or Card to Your Precinct’s Registered Democrats
In the training, we emphasized the
great importance of communications.
Why? It
increases Democratic Party awareness, provides access to the
Party, gives us more credibility, and demonstrates that the
new Democratic Party is more active and we will really make a
difference in 2002. Also,
this is one of the best ways to get new people involved.
I guarantee there are hundreds or even thousands of
activists out there who we have not tapped simply because no
has asked them to get involved or they just didn’t know HOW
to get involved.
How many people should you mail to?
You may be willing and able to send to every Dem in
your precinct or you may be limited in time or money and can
only send 50 to 100 letters per mailing.
Maybe you can send a different letter regarding a
District event every few months, but each time you do a
mailing you select a different small group of voters in your
precinct. Thus,
over the course of the year, everyone gets one letter from
you. That may be
a lot easier for your schedule and your budget.
And I will guarantee, that this effort
will turn out hundreds or possibly thousands of new activists
for the Party who will be encouraged by the contact to get
involved!
Your goal.
Try to send a letter or postcard to Dems in your
precinct at least once a year during off election years and at
least twice during election years.
The most important letters are those meant to get out
the vote, such as in the samples that follow.
(Full names and inside addresses have been deleted for
the sake of privacy.) Notice
in almost all of these letters, you should never miss an
opportunity to promote what is going on in your district.
This provides access to the Democratic Party and gives
us more credibility.
Even if the people you write to in your
precinct never attend a meeting, your letter demonstrates
clearly that Arizona Democrats are proud and active.
Because the Republican-controlled press in this part of
the state (Maricopa County) tends to either ignore or
denigrate the Democratic Party, even staunch Democrats
sometimes think there’s a mostly inactive party here. That is certainly NOT the case, but to them perception is
reality and people despair.
I cannot overemphasize the value of one-to-one personal
contact between the party and individuals.
Also, by giving out your phone
number and offering to help voters, whether it is to
help them obtain basic information or vote-by-mail ballots,
PCs are offering a service. In today’s service
economy, it is astonishing how often service is woefully
lacking. If you offer to do something, make sure you
follow up! Again, it takes very little effort, but in a
world of low expectations, even a little effort is often
greatly appreciated.

Dear
_____,
Hi!
I am a neighbor and the Democratic precinct
committee person for (your precinct).
PCs, as we’re called, are the grass-roots
leadership of the party.
We’ll
soon begin one of the most important election years we

our candidates, issues, and the Democratic Party.
Feel free to call or e-mail me.
Also, enclosed is a postcard.
If you would like to get involved, just let us

Why get involved now?
First and foremost, the stakes have never been
higher. Second,
moderates and progressives of every stripe are the
silent majority. We need to get more involved.
Finally, I’d like to invite you to our next district
meeting. (Date,
time, location, and guests/subject matter of your next
district meeting. Make sure directions are clear and complete.)
If
you’re interested in receiving our District
newsletter, please give me a call or drop a line to
(your e-mail address).
If you have any questions or there is anything I
can do to help you, please give me a call: (your
